The law firm of Miller & Steiert, PC has its roots with Martin P. Miller, Arapahoe County, and Littleton, Colorado.
Originally, Martin Miller was living on the East Coast of the United States and joined the military to escape his circumstances. During his military service in the US Army infantry during World War II, First Lieutenant Miller was critically injured and returned to the United States to recuperate at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. Upon his discharge, rather than return back east where he was raised, he decided to remain in the Denver metropolitan area to attend the University of Denver and the Westminster Law School, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Admitted to the Colorado Bar that year, Marty practiced for more than a half century and loved the law and his clients until the end of his life.
Marty commenced his legendary law practice in 1951 at the age of 31. In the beginning of his practice, Marty was elected as Colorado’s youngest District Judge of the Arapahoe, Adams and Jefferson County District Courts. In 1959, following Marty’s tenure as a Judge, Governor McNichols asked Marty to become the first District Attorney for the newly established Eighteenth Judicial District, where he served as D.A. for Arapahoe and Douglas Counties for ten years. At that time, the position was considered a part-time job, and as a result of countless referrals from many satisfied clients, Marty founded the Law Office of Martin P. Miller the same year.
After faithfully serving the public for so many years, Marty was able to focus on his private practice full time. Marty described his private practice as “a general law practice that covers a broad spectrum including business law, corporate law, criminal law, probate law, family law, and real estate law.” Michael Miller, the current senior partner and Marty’s eldest son described the practice as a “whatever comes through the door” practice “where no one ever came into the office with or without money and left without a lawyer.” Marty said that he has always felt strongly that, as a lawyer, he has an obligation to give back to the community that has given so much to him. Marty had always acted out of a desire to help those in need, and as a result, better than 20 percent of his time as an attorney was spent representing clients without money or the ability to hire an attorney.
Marty practiced solo for the first twenty-six years, and brought on attorneys to assist on a case by case basis. In 1975, Robert Leher, the son of one of Marty’s best friends became Marty’s first and only partner for a decade. The next partner was his son Michael Miller who joined the law firm in 1980, when it was known as Miller & Leher, and was made a partner about four years later. Marty’s daughter Katy Miller then joined the firm in 1985, followed by Robert Steiert in 1986, a family friend who had been Mike’s best friend growing up. Katy and Bob became the firm’s third and fourth partners in the late 1980s.
When Robert Leher’s retirement approached early in the 1990s, the practice operated as Miller, Leher & Steiert for about a year before dropping Leher’s name altogether in 1993 and becoming Miller & Steiert, the name on the letterhead today.
Although the name may have changed slightly over the past 50 years, the level of commitment to our clients remains as consistent now as it was in 1959 by continuously offering services in the fields of commercial, criminal, domestic, employment and personal injury law to name a few.
Today the offices of Miller & Steiert “established in 1959” bustle with the work of 11 attorneys, two of them Marty’s children, and many staff and paralegals. A new generation still fights for underdogs, and the Miller name continues to anchor a practice that for more than half a century has touched thousands of Colorado lives.
